Tia Mowry, 42, just revealed a 68-pound weight-loss transformation on Instagram.
The Sister Sister star said she lost the weight “at her own pace” after giving birth to her daughter Cairo in 2018.
Mowry says exercise, eating well, and meditation have made a positive difference in her overall health.
Tia Mowry just revealed a 68-pound weight-loss transformation. On Tuesday, the actress posted a picture of herself wearing a gray turtle neck with a lengthy caption about her weight loss progress after giving birth to her daughter Cairo in 2018.
“I’m very proud that I did it my way and in my time. I didn’t feel rushed to snap back. I enjoyed breast feeding and spending quality time with #Cairo and my son #Cree,” she wrote on Instagram.
In 2018, Mowry announced she was diagnosed with gestational diabetes and mastitis, which is inflammation of the breast tissue. Six months after giving birth to Cairo, she gave an update about postpartum life on Instagram.
“Still breastfeeding and pumping while working. Has it been easy? No. However, I’ve continued to push through #mastitis and working sometimes 16-hour days,” she wrote in the caption. “Do I still have a little pouch? Yes. Ever heard of #DiastasisRecti? It’s when the abs separate during pregnancy. Shining a spotlight on this because I had never heard of it.”
Mowry said that, when the time is right, she will “go hard with core work to restore.” Below, everything she’s shared about her weight loss journey.
1. She vowed to make healthier choices after being diagnosed with gestational diabetes.
In July 2018, Mowry was diagnosed with gestational diabetes, a condition in which a mom’s blood sugar levels become too high during pregnancy. Although gestational diabetes typically goes away on its own, it boosts the risk of developing type 2 diabetes later in life.
Mowry shared a video of her working out postpartum following her diagnosis. “I was lost for words. Never ever did I think, THIS could happen to me,” she wrote. “Time to get back on track. Making healthy choices and moving.”
2. She wanted to “bounce back” at her own pace.
Mowry made it clear that she was going to move through her health journey on her own timeline. The actress shared a video of her working out and opened up about her progress in the caption.
“The key to ‘bouncing back’ is simple: stay motivated and work at your own pace!! Oh, and squats. Lots of squats. 🍑🍑🍑,” she wrote, adding that trainer Marcela Kim was helping her get back into shape. She shared another video working out with Marcela in August, this time performing tricep dips.
3. She started getting closer to her goal.
In October 2019, Mowry addressed some online trolls who made comments about her body during and after her pregnancy.
“#17months post pregnant. I did it my way and in my time. Many women feel the need to #snapback right away after they deliver. That was never the goal for me,” she wrote. “I was called fat during my pregnancy and I was called fat after my pregnancy. Why do we do this to each other? Instead of love one another other? I will never understand that.”
“I intentionally documented my journey and became vulnerable to show women that it’s okay to go at your own pace, it is okay to love yourself no matter where you are in your journey,” she continued. “Do not fold to societal pressures. After hard work with just diet and exercise, today I’m closer to my goal. Do I have loose skin and stretch marks? YES. Guess what?? I LOVE all me and I want you to love all of you too.”
4. She said she was starting to feel like herself 18 months after giving birth.
In December 2019, Mowry was embracing herself postpartum, and encouraged other moms to do the same. She shared progress videos of her performing lunges, writing in the caption, “Embrace yourself, ladies! ESPECIALLY after childbirth!! It took me #18months to start feeling myself again.”
5. She wants moms to know that self-care isn’t selfish.
Everyone deserves to have the time to focus on themselves and their health and wellbeing, moms included. Mowry shared a progress video in December 2019 with an inspiring message to moms who think self-care is selfish. “You asked and here you you go! More workout videos of my progress postpartum. Self-care isn’t selfish 👊🏽,”she wrote alongside a video of her doing push-ups.
6. She squeezed in a workout whenever she could.
In the first week of January, Mowry was in the gym putting in work, even on the weekends. “Happy weekend! I love to start off the weekend with a good sweat,” she captioned a gym selfie. “Even if you only have 20 mins, it’s an important part of your #wellness journey! GET MOVING.”
7. But she was still embracing her stretch marks.
While Mowry wrote that she was focusing on her core in February 2020, she also said she was embracing her body the way it is. “Got it in! Working on my #core,” she captioned a photo of her performing a lunge. “Let’s talk about the mid-section after pregnancy! It can be the most challenging! But I’m having fun with it! I’m not being too hard on my self. I’m embracing the excess skin and stretch marks. Two amazing beautiful children were birthed and I rejoice.”
8. She began meditating as a form of self-care.
Meditation is an amazing way to relieve stress and unwind, and Mowry is a fan of the practice. In March, she gave an update 22 months post-baby and said she was starting to feel even better, thanks to her healthy lifestyle.
“Eating the right foods, working out, meditating and taking my supplements @shopanser 💪🏽 For the past 3 years my body wasn’t just for me. It was for my baby,” she wrote in an Instagram caption. “One year, prepping the womb, second year carrying, third, breast feeding my daughter. My point is, it’s okay to go at your pace to get back to you. Also, if it is a goal of yours, I’m here to tell you, you can do it.”
9. She loaded up her plate with nutritious foods.
In March, Mowry further opened up about her meditation practice, saying she uses the Calm app. She also kept her mental health in check by spending more time in nature and FaceTiming with loved ones.
“When it comes to my health, I’ve been focusing on things that support my immune system system. Not forgetting to eat my veggies (frozen) and fruits loaded in vitamin C including supplements with zinc, garlic, and iron,” she wrote. “I’m also working out out to help with immunity. It’s amazing how many incredible apps are avail to help keep your body moving!”
10. She’s a fan of supplements, so she made her own!
In July, Mowry shared that she has been taking Anser Vitamins (FYI, she created the brand). “The past few months have been up and down, but @shopanser has always been such a joy for me because I’m able to remind women that taking charge of their health is so important and deserved,” she wrote on Instagram.
