97,000 kids tested positive the last two weeks of July; US remains the world’s most infected country

As the U.S. reached another bleak milestone on Sunday, a glimmer of hope from New York: The Empire State reported its lowest positivity rate since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic.

New York, for weeks the epicenter of the U.S. outbreak, reported the rate — the average number of positive results for every 100 tests — hit a record low 0.78% on Saturday. That figure once reached nearly 47% in early April, although testing was much more limited at the time. The rate had been around 1% since early June.

Meanwhile, the U.S. hit 5 million confirmed cases of COVID-19, just 17 days after reaching 4 million cases — but experts agree the number of cases is actually much greater – potentially 10 times higher than what’s been reported, according to federal data.

The U.S. remains the most infected country, with about 25% of the worldwide cases.

Lebanon president says he knew of chemicals at port in July

BEIRUT (AP) — Lebanese President Michel Aoun knew about the huge stockpile of explosive material stored at Beirut’s port nearly three weeks before it blew up, he said Friday, adding he had ordered action be taken about it at the time, although the top leader also said he had no authority over the facility.

“Do you know how many problems have been accumulating?” Aoun replied when a reporter pressed whether he should have followed up on his order.

Aoun’s comments were the most senior confirmation that Lebanon’s top leaders and security officials were aware of the 2,750 tons of highly explosive ammonium nitrate that had been stored at the port for years.

The chemicals exploded Tuesday after apparently being set off by a fire, in a massive blast that killed nearly 150 people, wounded thousands and caused billions of dollars of damage across the city. Bodies were still being recovered

ILLINOIS — State health officials on Sunday announced 1,541 new cases of the coronavirus and 1 additional death from COVID-19, the respiratory illness caused by the virus. Together with the 1,426 new cases and 12 deaths announced Saturday, that brings the statewide total to 171,424 confirmed infections and 7,398 known deaths. Another 1,242 probable cases and 192 probable deaths are not included in the official totals.

The latest deaths include:

Health officials said Friday that four Illinois counties are at a “warning level” for a surge in cases: Adams, LaSalle, Peoria and Raldolph. Outbreaks there are “associated with business and risky behavior,” officials said. Some of those risky behaviors include holding large social events, traveling to coronavirus hot spots, not wearing masks or social distancing, and — especially among young people — crowding into bars and attending parties.

Based on indicators such as positive-test rates, new cases, hospitilizations and deaths,

Snickers launched an initiative that lets you fill out an online Send a Snickers from home form so that you can put down the name and cellphone of an essential worker. They will then be sent a voucher to redeem for a free Snickers bar at any Walmart, no expiration date.

July 15 tax return deadline is right around the corner: What to know

July 15 is the new April 15 for those who still have not filed a tax return. The traditional April income tax deadline was extended this year  for 2019 tax returns, due to the upheaval created by COVID-19.

The one-time extension applied for Michigan returns too, as well as the City of Detroit returns.

Think everybody who waited owes big money? Think again. Oddly enough, experts say millions of procrastinators are likely owed a federal income tax refund for 2019.

H&R Block estimates that more than half of its clients who still need to file would receive a refund after they file. And the tax giant is running TV ads this summer highlighting the prospects of a tax refund.

As many as 11.3 million people still had not received federal income tax refunds for 2019 taxes — down 10.8% from a year ago, based on data through June 19 from

Trump Trolled for Fourth of July Event Performer as Internet Recalls Obama’s Star Power

President Donald Trump is being trolled on Twitter after footage of a man singing a Bruno Mars song at his Fourth of July event at the White House was shared online.

Many of the president’s critics were quick to point out that former President Barack Obama had the real Bruno Mars perform at his Fourth of July party in 2015, calling it “a tale of two presidents.”

“Perfect anology [sic] for the deterioration at the White House: 5 years ago the real Bruno Mars performed at the White House,” one user wrote on Twitter while retweeting the video of Trump’s celebration.

How’s your back? If you’re like most of us, these last few months of less activity (and more staying in) have meant noticeable aches and pains. Add to that the stress of sleeping on an old mattress and you might find your back in a constant state of discomfort.

While core exercises are never a bad idea, no amount of Zoom fitness will fix your back if your bed is the root of the problem. Of course now is not the time to visit mattress stores and plop down Goldilocks-style in search of a match. But it IS
